Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site

etowah.jpgThe Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site is located in Cartersville, Georgia, just west of Lake Allatoona. The impressive 54-acre site was home to several thousand Native Americans between the dates of 1000 A.D. and 1550 A.D. The site includes six earthen mounds, a plaza, village area, borrow pits and defensive pits.

Although only 9% of the site has been excavated, visitors to the area have a glimpse into the lives of these people and their culture that was rich in ritual. There is a 63-foot earthen knoll that towers above the area. It is assumed this was used as a platform for the home of the priest/chief. Nobility were buried in elaborate costumes in another knoll with possessions they were thought to have needed in the afterlife.

Visitors enjoy a museum where they can learn more about the Native Americans that lived here and their ways of life.
