Boat Docks on Lake Allatoona

Lake Allatoona Docks

One of the best things about living on Lake Allatoona is that many homes are allowed to have their own private dock for direct access to the lake. Unlike some lakes in North Georgia, you're not allowed to live on the docks, but you are allowed to keep a boat there permanantly.

The Corps of Engineers, which issues permits allowing people to have docks, also sets certain regulations.

Location Rules

  • Docks need to be on the nearest point of shoreline to the owner’s property.
  • You can't move more the dock more than one hundred feet left or right of this point, even if the lake level drops.
  • Docks need to be at least 50 feet apart.
  • Docks can't reach more than one third of the way across a cove or channel.
  • Docks need at least 4 feet of water underneath at full pool.

Dock Construction Rules

  • Docks need to be approved by the Corps before being used.
  • Walkways from the shore to the dock may be either fixed or floating.  Fixed walkway must not exceed 20 feet and floating walkways 40 feet.
  • Docks must be made of wood, recycled plastic, and metal.  All wood used must be either pressure treated, cedar, cypress, or marine grade plywood.
  • Boat docks without boatslip can be a maximum of 200 square feet.  Boat docks with a boatslip can be a maximum of 800 square feet.
  • Upper levels are allowed, but not walls.
